The Savannah Cat | |||||||||||||||||||
The Savannah is a wildcat /domestic hybrid. It is a cross between the African Serval and a domestic cat, ususally a Bengal. It is a very new breed. They look very similar to their ancestor, the Serval. It is a smaller, more domestic version of the African Serval. Most states and municipals consider the Savannah a domestic breed. They have the personality traits of the Serval and of domestic cats. They tend to have personalities that are very dog-like, and like to be in the middle of whatever is going on. They also like to be in high places, like on your shoulder, shelves, refrigerators, or entertainment centers. They like playing games, and will start the games on their own. A favorite of theirs is playing fetch. The F-1 Savannah will get along with children if they understand not to chase, tease or pull on the cat. The F-2, and or later generations will be more tolerant of rough children. The Savannah will get along with other cats and dogs if they are introduced at a very young age. They will walk on a leash.
Diet: High qualirty food like Iams. Or also, Mazuri Small Feline Diet(which can be ordered through a Purina food dealer. You could also try Zupreem canned food. Some have found that some like thr dry food more because it helps keep the teeth clean. Donot skimp on the food- they need the proper nutirents for strong bones, bone growth, and to grow to their full size. Brittle bones can and will cause a life-time of suffering for the animal. Savannahs seem to have a health quality called "hybrid vigor". Which means that cross breeding between different species frequently results in offspring that are very strong and disease resistant. They still need all their vaccinations. Registration of Savannah Cats can be done through TICA (The International Cat Association) as an experimental breed. It will take some time before the Savannah Cat is recognized as a breed with some of the other cat registries such as CFA. |
